Annotation:

The main objective of the geophysical survey performed on levees in Humber estuary Leeds & York area: to provide general description of their inner structure and homogeneity. During the flood event in December 2013 several levees were significantly damaged by overtopping and subsequent backward erosion. The results of the geophysical survey can be used:

- to prepare an optimal proposal of the planned engineering geological survey

- to prepare the plan of repair and maintenance works, if needed

- to revise / adjust the flood models within the river basin by using the information about the levee homogeneity and prevailing material the levee was constructed of

- to assess the construction of the embankments, principally whether inclusions/embedments are present in all embankments and whether these might be a contributory feature in embankments that failed

The geophysical survey was carried out in two stages: Stage I in the years 2014 and 2015 and Stage II in the years 2016 - 2017 as a part of a larger commission of the reassessments of the fragility curves for the grass covered earth embankments on the Humber performed by Client, HR Wallingford, ltd. for the Environment Agency of UK.

Stage III was carried out in the year 2018 as a part of a larger commission of the reassessments of the fragility curves for the grass covered earth embankments on the Humber estuary and GMS survey at river Trent.
